Posted October 26, The family of an Indigenous boy seriously assaulted in the centre of Alice Springs say they believe it was racially motivated and they are worried about safety on the streets. A year-old boy, who cannot be identified, was beaten unconscious in the Bkys Mall on a Friday night.
His aunties — who are too scared to identify themselves for fear of retribution — said his cousin was also assaulted. She said both boys were at her house for dinner before she told them to go to the youth centre and take the bus home because "it was getting late".
The family members are upset by what happened to their nephews but want the community to unite, rather than divide. A spike of youth crime incidents in recent months has put the Alice Springs community on edge, leading some people to take the law into their own hands.
